The picture
- 16 frames per second, so motion judders for real instead of being faked
- Heavy grain, warm golden colour and halation around highlights
- The frame weaves in the gate; exposure breathes like a mechanical shutter
- Dust specks, the occasional scratch, and a light leak at the edge
The sound
The magnetic stripe down the edge of the film: mono, 180 Hz to 4.2 kHz, loud hiss and heavy wow and flutter. The worst-sounding machine in the app, on purpose.

The display
None. A film camera had no electronics to display anything with, and the empty frame is part of recognising it.
8mm in REC: questions
How do I get the 8mm look on iPhone video?
Open REC, pick 8mm from the camera strip and press record. The look runs live in the viewfinder at 16 frames per second, so what you frame is what you get. You can also import a video you already shot and develop it through 8mm.
Does the 8mm camera change the sound?
Yes. The magnetic stripe down the edge of the film: mono, 180 Hz to 4.2 kHz, loud hiss and heavy wow and flutter. The worst-sounding machine in the app, on purpose.
Is 8mm free in REC?
Every camera, 8mm included, is in the free download, and your first take is free. Unlimited takes need REC Pro ($9.99 a year or $2.99 a week, US prices).
