The Best VHS Camcorder Apps for iPhone in 2026
Updated October 3, 2026. We make REC ("REC: VHS Camcorder & Retro Cam"), so read this knowing that. We say plainly where another app is the better pick. Everything we say about other apps comes from their App Store pages in October 2026; check the App Store before you buy, because prices and features change.
A VHS app has one job: make a clip from a 2026 iPhone look and feel like it came off a tape from 1994. Most get the colour roughly right. What separates them is everything else: whether the effect is live while you shoot, whether the motion and resolution feel like tape or like a filter over sharp 30 fps video, and whether the sound gives the game away.
The short answer
- You want the classic, paid once: Rarevision VHS.
- You want many machines, not just VHS, each with its own sound and display: REC (ours).
- You want to tweak every parameter of a VHS signal yourself: the other REC, "REC: VHS Camera - Retro Video".
- You mostly shoot photos and want some video looks too: Dazz Cam or 1998 Cam.
- You want Super 8, not VHS: 8mm Vintage Camera.
- You want text, emoji and music on top: VHS Cam.

Rarevision VHS
The app most people mean when they say "VHS app". It has been on the App Store since 2015, costs $5.99 once (a free Lite version exists), and it is built around having fun with the tape: you can change the on-screen date, make animated titles, glitch the picture by shaking the phone and use a fake zoom. Its page promises videos that look and sound like tapes pulled out of storage.
Pick it if you want VHS specifically, prefer paying once, and like on-screen titles. Skip it if you want other formats like Hi8, MiniDV or Super 8 in the same app.
VHS Cam
A long-running free app with a yearly subscription and ads in the free version. It focuses on the date display and extras: import your own videos, add text, emoji and music, flashlight and zoom.
Pick it if you want to decorate clips with text and music. Skip it if ads bother you or you want the footage itself to feel more like tape.
8mm Vintage Camera
The Super 8 specialist, around since 2010 and used, according to its page, in an Oscar-winning documentary. It has film colours, dust and scratches, frame shake, a jitter button and projector sound, and it lets you adjust the strength of each effect. $3.99, with a subscription for more film stocks.
Pick it if film is what you are after and you like dialling in strength. Skip it if you want camcorder tape.
Dazz Cam and 1998 Cam
Both are hugely popular vintage cameras that are photo cameras first. Dazz Cam lists video formats including 8mm, 16mm, VHS and DCR alongside dozens of film and digital photo cameras; 1998 Cam has 100+ filters with light leaks, dust and grain. If you want one app for film photos and occasional retro video, either is a good choice.
Pick one if most of what you shoot is photos. Skip them if video is the point and you want the sound and motion of tape, not only the colour.
REC: VHS Camera - Retro Video (the other REC)
Released in March 2026 by a different developer, with a confusingly similar name. Its pitch is a full analog signal chain: 80 VHS profiles in eight collections, from subtle tape warmth to heavy damage, and over 70 parameters to build your own look, plus full manual camera controls.
Pick it if you want to tune a VHS signal yourself. Skip it if you would rather pick a machine and shoot.
REC: VHS Camcorder & Retro Cam (ours)
REC treats each look as a whole machine rather than a filter. Pick VHS and you get the picture at about half resolution, colour bleeding sideways, the head-switch tear at the bottom, a mono audio track cut at 8 kHz with hiss, and the VHS display with a blinking REC and a tape counter. Pick Super 8 and the viewfinder drops to 16 frames a second with gate weave and dust, the sound sounds like a magnetic stripe, and there is no display at all, because a film camera had no electronics. There are 23 machines: VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Digital8, MiniDV, a fisheye skate deck, Betacam, a vlog camera, a Y2K digicam and an action cam; Super 8, 16 mm and a cinema grade; CCTV, night vision, thermal, a 2005 flip phone, a 2-bit handheld camera and more.
There is deliberately no strength slider: if you want less tape, you pick a cleaner machine. Compile Tape splices several clips into one video with a torn tape seam at every join. Your first take is free; after that it is $2.99 a week or $9.99 a year.
Pick it if you want the whole camcorder, picture, motion and sound, and more than one era. Skip it if you want photos (REC is video only), a one-time price, or fine control over individual parameters.
How we compared
We read each app's App Store page in October 2026 for price, formats and features, and only describe what the developer says the app does. We have not measured other apps' output. If something here is out of date, write to support@engcraft.io and we will correct it.
FAQ
What is the best VHS app for iPhone?
It depends on what you want. Rarevision VHS is the long-running classic with a one-time price, on-screen titles and a fake zoom. REC simulates 23 whole machines (VHS, Hi8, MiniDV, Super 8 and more) with their own frame rate, sound and HUD. The other app called REC (by a different developer) gives you 80 VHS profiles and over 70 parameters to tune. Dazz Cam and 1998 Cam are photo cameras first, with some video looks.
Is there a free VHS camera app?
Several are free to download with a subscription for the full app: VHS Cam, Dazz Cam, 1998 Cam, both apps called REC and Rarevision VHS Lite. Rarevision VHS and 8mm Vintage Camera are paid up front. In REC (ours), your first take is free with every camera.
Which VHS app also changes the audio?
REC runs the sound through each machine's audio path: band limits, hiss, saturation and wow and flutter, mono where the format was mono. Rarevision VHS describes videos that look and sound like real tapes, and the other REC lists tape warble in the audio. 8mm Vintage Camera can add projector sound.
Are there two apps called REC?
Yes. 'REC: VHS Camcorder & Retro Cam' (App Store id 6800895868) is ours, by Engcraft. 'REC: VHS Camera - Retro Video' (id 6758242471) is a different app by another developer. They are not related.
