VHS vs Betamax: Which Was Better, and Why VHS Won
Updated October 17, 2026. We make REC, an iPhone camera with camcorder looks including a broadcast "Beta" camera, so we mention it below. The history and numbers are general knowledge about the formats.
Betamax versus VHS is the classic format war: the format with the better picture lost to the one that recorded for longer and was everywhere. The difference in picture was real but small; the difference in convenience was large.

Picture quality
Betamax ran its tape at a higher writing speed and gave slightly sharper, cleaner pictures than VHS at their original standard speeds: around 250 lines of horizontal resolution against roughly 240, with less noise. On the small CRT televisions of the time, most people could not tell. Both formats then added slower speeds to fit more on a tape, and at those speeds the gap mattered even less than the extra hours.
Both kept improving. SuperBeta sharpened Betamax in 1985 and ED Beta reached about 500 lines in 1987, while S-VHS took VHS to about 400 lines the same year. By then the market had already chosen.
Why VHS won
- Recording time. The first VHS tapes held two hours, long enough for a film or a football game. Early Betamax held one. Sony extended Betamax, JVC extended VHS further, and VHS kept the lead people cared about.
- Licensing. JVC licensed VHS to many manufacturers, which brought more models, lower prices and more shelf space. Betamax had fewer makers behind it.
- Rental. As video rental took off in the 1980s, shops stocked the format most customers owned, which pushed more people to VHS, which pushed shops further to VHS.
- Camcorders. VHS and its compact VHS-C cassette went on to dominate family camcorders, alongside Sony's own 8 mm formats.
Betacam is a different thing
Sony's professional Betacam, introduced in 1982, used a cassette of the same shape as Betamax but recorded the picture as separate brightness and colour components at a much higher tape speed. Betacam SP, from 1986, became the standard field and studio format for television news and production for decades. It looks noticeably better than any home tape: rich, stable colour with far less bleed, and none of the tracking trouble of a worn VHS.
In REC: the Beta camera is the Betacam broadcast look, not consumer Betamax: rich, saturated colour that stays put, visible scanlines and a slow rolling bar, much less tracking trouble than home tape, a broadcast audio path from 40 Hz to 15 kHz with barely any hiss, and a "BETACAM SP" label with timecode. For the home-tape look, use the VHS camera.
What a Betamax or VHS home video looks like
The two home formats look closely related: soft from side to side, colour that bleeds past edges, noise in flat areas, tearing at the bottom of the frame and hiss on the sound. What resolution is VHS? explains where each of those comes from, and VHS vs Hi8 vs MiniDV covers the camcorder formats that followed.
FAQ
Was Betamax better quality than VHS?
Slightly, at first. At their standard speeds Betamax resolved about 250 lines against roughly 240 for VHS, with a little less noise. Most viewers could barely see the difference, and it shrank further at the long-play speeds people actually used.
Which came first, Betamax or VHS?
Betamax. Sony launched it in 1975; JVC launched VHS in Japan in 1976 and in the United States in 1977.
Why did VHS beat Betamax?
Mostly recording time and licensing. The first VHS tapes held two hours, enough for a film, while early Betamax held one. JVC licensed VHS to many manufacturers, so VHS recorders were cheaper and more widely sold, and video rental shops stocked the format more people owned.
Is Betacam the same as Betamax?
No. Betacam, from 1982, is a professional broadcast format that uses a cassette of the same shape but records the picture very differently, at much higher quality. It was the standard for TV news for decades. Betamax tapes and Betacam tapes do not play in each other's machines.
When did Betamax end?
Sony stopped making Betamax recorders in 2002 and stopped making Betamax tapes in March 2016.
